Overview

Financial Management is the fourth 6-week course in our Launch Academy. This course helps you establish sound financial management practices and begin to understand how to budget for and finance your business’ needs.

Course Objectives

  • Establish financial management practices for your business
  • Set up an accounting system for your business and begin tracking your finances in the system
  • Develop your business budget to reflect your business strategy
  • Identify funding needs and potential funding options for your business

Introduction
  • Gain an understanding of the energy of money and your relationship with money, and how to align that relationship with the values of your business
  • Learn about basic practices and systems for setting financial goals and managing your finances
  • Develop financial goals and a plan for implementing financial practices and systems in your business
Separate Your Finances
  • Gain an understanding of why it is important to separate your business and personal finances as you grow your business
  • Discuss what to look for in a business banking relationship
  • Identify the business banking partner you want to work with and set up your business bank account with them
Track Your Finances
  • Gain an understanding of why it is important to start tracking your finances early on in your business growth
  • Learn how to use a spreadsheet to begin tracking finances for your business
  • Track the finances for your business over the past year or since you started the business
Create Your Budget: Revenue
  • Review how to analyze your business’ past financial data to draw trends and identify future business sales
  • Learn how to reflect your business strategy in forecasting your business sales
  • Forecast your startup business sales
Create Your Budget: Expenses
  • Review how to analyze your business’ past financial data to draw trends and identify future business costs
  • Learn how to reflect your business strategy in forecasting your business expenses
  • Budget your startup business expenses
Startup Financing
  • Learn how to use your basic business budget to identify how much startup financing your business needs
  • Learn about the different options for helping to finance your business’ startup costs
  • Identify how much startup financing your business needs and which startup financing option is best for your business

Course Details

Length: This course is 6 weeks (18 clock hours).

Format: This course is delivered online and combines live, interactive learning with flexible, self-paced work. Each week includes:

  • Weekly live, instructor-led workshops via Zoom
  • Online readings, videos, and applied activities you complete on your own schedule
  • Facilitated peer group sessions focused on learning progress and course activities

Time Commitment: You will spend about 8 hours per week engaging in workshops, coursework, and applied business-building activities.

Prerequisites: Successful completion of the first quarter of the Launch Academy, including Explore Your Idea Course, Getting Organized Course, and Communicating Effectively Course.

Enrollment Requirement: This course is only available to those enrolled in Launch Academy.

Completion: This course is completed on a Pass / No Pass basis. To pass the course, you must attend required sessions and complete all assigned course activities and final deliverables.

Support & Feedback: You will receive ongoing instructional feedback throughout the course during workshops and facilitated peer mentoring conversations.
